چکیده
FLORICAULA (FLO) of Antirrhinum and LEAFY (LFY) of Arabidopsis encode plant-specific transcription factors, which are necessary and sufficient to specify floral meristem identity. We isolated WFL, a wheat FLO/LFY ortholog, and analyzed its expression pattern. RT-PCR analysis indicated that WFL is expressed predominantly in young spike. The WFL expression pattern during reproductive development was analyzed in more detail by using in situ hybridization technique. WFL transcripts were observed in all layers of the young spike excepting spikelet initiation sites as axillary meristem. In the double-ridge stage, WFL transcripts were localized in the lower ridge but were absent in the upper ridge, where spikelet meristem initiates. The WFL expression pattern indicated that WFL is associated with spikelet formation rather than floral meristem identity in wheat. As development of floret proceeds, the WFL transcripts were detectable in the developing palea, but not in other floral organs, suggesting that WFL may play a novel role in developing palea in the wheat floret.

VFL, the grapevine FLORICAULA/LEAFY ortholog, is expressed in meristematic regions independently of their fate.
The flowering process in grapevine (Vitis vinifera) takes place in buds and extends for two consecutive growing seasons. To understand the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying this process, we have characterized grapevine bud development, cloned the grapevine FLORICAULA/LEAFY (FLO/LFY) ortholog, VFL, and analyzed its expression patterns during vegetative and reproductive development. Flo...
متن کاملHeterochronic development of the floret meristem determines grain number per spikelet in diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid wheats.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The inflorescence of grass species such as wheat, rice and maize consists of a unique reproductive structure called the spikelet, which is comprised of one, a few, or several florets (individual flowers). When reproductive growth is initiated, the inflorescence meristem differentiates a spikelet meristem as a lateral branch; the spikelet meristem then produces a floret meris...
متن کاملThe indeterminate floral apex1 gene regulates meristem determinacy and identity in the maize inflorescence.
Meristems may be determinate or indeterminate. In maize, the indeterminate inflorescence meristem produces three types of determinate meristems: spikelet pair, spikelet and floral meristems. These meristems are defined by their position and their products. We have discovered a gene in maize, indeterminate floral apex1 (ifa1) that regulates meristem determinacy. The defect found in ifa1 mutants ...
متن کاملPANICLE PHYTOMER2 (PAP2), encoding a SEPALLATA subfamily MADS-box protein, positively controls spikelet meristem identity in rice
In rice panicle development, new meristems are generated sequentially in an organized manner and acquire their identity in a time- and position-dependent manner. In the panicle of the panicle phytomer2-1 (pap2-1) mutant, the pattern of meristem initiation is disorganized and newly formed meristems show reduced competency to become spikelet meristems, resulting in the transformation of early ari...
متن کاملTAWAWA1, a regulator of rice inflorescence architecture, functions through the suppression of meristem phase transition.
Inflorescence structures result from the activities of meristems, which coordinate both the renewal of stem cells in the center and organ formation at the periphery. The fate of a meristem is specified at its initiation and changes as the plant develops. During rice inflorescence development, newly formed meristems acquire a branch meristem (BM) identity, and can generate further meristems or t...
